International English Language Assessment (IELA)

Introduction

IELA is the International English Language Assessment test. It is the first of its kind, international test of proficiency in English, in India. It measures candidates’ ability to communicate in English across the main language skills of Reading, Writing, Grammar and Vocabulary. The test is ideal for candidates who intend to study with English as the medium of instruction and where English is the language of communication.

The test was introduced by Symbiosis in 2007. It has been designed by a renowned teacher – scholar – administrator of international repute. It is a mandatory diagnostic test for international students who desire to study at Symbiosis institutes. The test assesses candidate’s proficiency in English and determines his/her suitability to study in an undergraduate or postgraduate level programme. The IELA score is recognized by all the Symbiosis institutes as a trusted and valid indicator of students’ ability to communicate in English.

A. About the Test

The IELA Test is offered as a Computer Based Test (CBT). It is also available in a Paper Based Test (PBT) version for students less familiar with computers. Candidates can choose the suitable option while registering for the test. The test is not based on any particular text book and is a general proficiency test of English.  

The IELA is a 150 marks test containing 120 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) for 120 marks and an essay writing task for 30 marks.

The duration of the test is 3 hours.

There is no negative marking.

B. Instructions for Students

It is a time test. A student must try to answer all MCQs in the given time. In case of a difficult question, the student should go over to the next question. He/she can go back to MCQs thus omitted, if time permits, later on.

C. How to Collect the Entrance Ticket?

The Entrance Ticket is available online through the student module. The candidate has to take the print of the same and report to the Symbiosis Centre for International Education along with passport size recent photograph for stamp and signature.

The candidate should show his/her passport as proof of identification to SCIE.

D. Result of the Test

The result of the test will be available at the Symbiosis Centre for International Education (SCIE) after 5 working days from the day of the test. Only 1 copy of the test score will be issued.

Results of the test are in terms of Bands ranging from 1 to 6, indicating the user’s proficiency level.

The test score is valid for two years only.

Candidates achieving band 3 & above qualify for admission to any undergraduate course of the Symbiosis International University, subject to availability of seats and other conditions.

To collect test results from the Symbiosis Centre for International Education (SCIE), candidates need to bring their IELA Entrance Ticket. If they wish to authorise someone to collect the result, they need to send a letter of authorisation to the Symbiosis Centre for International Education (SCIE) & the IELA Entrance Ticket.
